Combat or Tactical Boots

Combat / Tactical Boots are designed to meet the requirements of the harsh environments encountered by soldiers during actual combat or combat training.

The best type of boot to wear for tactical field operations and into combat clearly is dictated by the climate of the battlefield. The newer Combat / Tactical Boot designs incorporate several great features - like grip, ankle stability and foot protection for rugged and harsh environment. These modern Combat / Tactical Boots are normally made with waterproofed, hardened and chemically treated leather with variations on the basic lace up.

Jungle Boots

Jungle boots are Combat Boots designed for jungle warfare.  In hot, wet and humid environments standard Leather Combat boots don’t hold up, don’t drain and are uncomfortable to wear. Jungle boots have vent holes in the instep and sometimes a canvas or goretex upper to aid in ventilation and drainage of moisture.

How To Test For The Perfect Fit

Once you’ve selected the right Combat, Jungle, or Leather Boot for your needs, making sure it fits your feet is the single most important factor. A great boot that doesn’t fit well simply won’t work.

To fit well, a Combat, Jungle or Leather Boot needs to hold the foot securely and comfortably. It needs to be long enough so as not to crowd the toes, and wide enough to accommodate the foot and the usual pair of socks. The Combat, Jungle or Leather boot also needs to hold the heel securely in place to prevent slippage, the most common cause of blisters.

Combat, Jungle, Tactical, Leather Boots are made with two size indicators: size and width. Size indicates how long the boot is from the heel to the toe; width from side to side at the ball of the foot. Widths run from A (the narrowest) to E (the widest). However, one can get an even wider width in EE or EEE or even larger E sizes. The most common shoe and boot sizes are D and EE. Please check individual boots for available sizes.

Though you can measure your own foot for sizing, the best place to start is checking Footwear Sizing Chart.

So, you’ve found the right pair of boots for your needs, and they feel like they fit comfortably. How do you know for sure? Start by wearing the same socks that you’ll most likely be using, and then try to simulate the conditions that you will be wearing the boots in.

  • Can you wiggle your toes? A little bit of room is good.
  • Do your toes press against the front of the boots when you’re on a downward incline? They shouldn’t.
  • Does your heel stay in place when you walk around? It should.
  • How about the width? Slightly snug, but not tight, is best.
  • If you feel any “hot spots” as you walk around, they will likely only get worse and cause blisters.
  • When the boot is comfortably laced, are the two rows of eyelets touching? If so, you might need a narrower width.

Okay. You’ve done all of this and you think you’ve got the Combat, Tactical, Jungle or Leather Boots you want and fit you need. But if you still need a little adjustment, there are two main ways to improve the fit. The first is simple: tightening and loosening the laces at different parts of the boot to take up looseness or relax a tight area. The second is a bit more involved: substituting a thicker or thinner footbed to either increase or decrease the amount of space in the boot, thereby tightening or relaxing the fit. For example, a thicker footbed will raise the heel to eliminate slipping.

How to take care of your Boots

Make sure to clean your boots after use, especially if there is visible dirt and mud on them. Use a wet rag, sponge, or soft brush when cleaning. Small particles of debris can work their way into the pores of the leather, causing it to dry out and deteriorate. Unseen grime and oil-based particles can be removed by using cleaning gel. Apply the cleaning gel to the leather sparingly while it is still wet. Rinse off excess with tap water and air-dry thoroughly.

Boots that come with a Gore-Tex liner are already waterproof, but it is important that the leather be treated as well. Excess water can make the boots heavy and create water-spots between the leather and Gore-Tex liner. Constant soaking and drying of the leather can damage the fibers, causing the boots to become stiff and eventually ruining the snug fit of the product. When you notice the boots taking on excess water, it is time to apply Waterproofing Gel. After the boots have been cleaned, apply the gel with a clean rag, and work the substance deep into the pores of the leather. Allow the boots to dry for a few minutes then wipe away the excess.
